Top Firework Safety Tips For July 4th

Top Firework Safety Tips For July 4th

I was inspired to do this blog because this holiday I am going to be working in the Emergency Department and I really hope to not have to treat any burns that have been caused by fireworks.

Summary of the Safety Tips

  1. Professional Displays are optimal. If your township, city, or town has a display, make plans to attend instead of setting off fireworks on your own. So why not leave the pyrotechnics to the professionals?
  2. Keep Your Distance. Be extra careful to stay several feet away from the ignited fireworks. If a device fails to ignite, please do not try to do it again. Instead drop the malfunctioning firework into bucket of water to extinguish it and dispose of it immediately.
  3. Beware of Little Hands and Sparklers. Sparklers burnout rapidly often and can get as hot as 1200 degrees F (that is hot enough to melt plastic!). Please supervise your cherubs closely around any type of fireworks. A great alternative to sparklers for little hands are glow sticks. You can get some really great glow sticks at the Dollar store. 🙂
  4. Take Safety Precautions. Do not wear loose clothing while using fireworks. Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass. Dry grass will ignite rapidly and is a nidus for a large fire. Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush, leaves and flammable substances.  Always have a bucket of water and/or a fire extinguisher nearby. Know how to operate the fire extinguisher properly.
  5. If You Get Injured. If you or your child is injured, get the nearest Emergency Department. If you are on fire, stop, drop and roll to extinguish the flames and seek medical care immediately. If you get injured in the eyes, please refrain from rubbing and touching your eye because this can sometimes cause more damage.

I am writing this blog post on Canada Day so Happy Birthday Canada! July 4th is coming up in a few days. Please be safe as you enjoy your holidays!
