Night Shift Mom Tips: Find Your Why

Night Shift Mom Find Your Why

So strong mom what is the “why”? Your “why” is your impetus for everything that you do. It is what gets you up out of bed and on to do your daily activities. It is the reason for working hard and setting goals. It is the source of strength to carrying on when the road gets dark and hard. It is the spark that fuels your fire to be great.

Your “why” is personal. It is the thing that drives you. It can be a person or persons, a destination (figuratively or tangible), a fear, an event, or a survival instinct. The more powerful you “why” is, the more driven it will make you to crush your goals and be great.

Personally, my “why” is my family – my husband and three children. They are who I think about when I want to give up. The thought of them makes failing not an option. Life can be tough but when you have a strong “why” then even mountains are movable.

So, when I think about my 30 minutes of self care time, I think about my “why”. I want to take care of myself so that I can be there for my family. I want energy and wellness so that we can be active together. If my physical and mental self is well cared for then I am better equipped to take care of them. This carries over to better performance at work and for the patients I serve every night in the Emergency Department.

How Do You Recognize Your Why?

It is simple. If when you think about your impetus or your “why” you become emotional then you have hit the nail on the head. As humans, we need strong drivers to propel us forward. We are easily sidetracked and swayed so if we aren’t able to tap into a powerful driver. When life throws curve balls or you are fatigued by schedule disruptions, family crises, fatigue, instead of quitting on your self care you will fight to make it happen. Missing a day or two is not what I mean but pushing through to make it happen regularly so that the impact on you and those around you can be tremendous.

Close your eyes and think about that thing or person(s) that drives you and evokes strong emotion in you. That is your “why”. Write down your “why” and place in a space where you can see it everyday and be reminded constantly that you can do this!
