Episode 163: Doctors are Human Beings – A Look Inside the Lives of Physicians: Dr. Sandra Miller

Subscribe: Spotify |

Dr. Sandra Miller is a retired academic family physician who peeled back the layers of who she is to bring out her author skillset in her retirement. She writes fiction novels that depict the realistic everyday lives of women physicians.

She felt it was important to show that physicians are flawed and human, having the same struggles as others – addiction, anxiety, depression. The references to medicine in her novels, despite them being fiction, is accurate, which is something that is hard to find.

This episode is filled with discussions of the real-life issues that physicians may face: relationships, making an error in treatment, should there be an age at which a physician should be retiring, leaving medicine, and more!

You can learn more about Dr. Sandra Cavallo Miller here:

Sandra Cavallo Miller is a retired academic family physician. Little fiction has been written about family medicine or women doctors (outside of CSI), and she is on a mission to change that. When not writing, you might find her hiking with a dog, riding a horse, or sitting under a tree studying her favorite hobby, volcanology. Her writings and poems have been published in JAMA’s “A Piece of My Mind,” Pulse: Voices from the Heart of Medicine, Under the Sun, and Embark, among others. She lives in Phoenix, Arizona.

Her novels about a woman physician at the Grand Canyon Clinic, published by the University of Nevada Press, combine science-based medicine with adventure, geology, and romance. Her latest novel about a public health physician enters new territory rarely seen in fiction (Where No One Should Live).
