Podcast: 3 Reasons Professional Women Should Start One

If you are a professional woman who has yet to start a podcast or hasn’t even considered starting a podcast, you have come to the right place.
Face Your Fear – Podcast.
“Fear is only as deep as the mind allows.”
— Japanese Proverb
Let me tell you a secret. Some years ago, I was getting ready to give a talk to a group of resident doctors, and something happened to me. My whole body went into a state of shock. I had a sleepless night the night before as my mind raced with multiple iterations and scenarios of how the talk could go awry. Just before getting on stage, my heart decided to run a marathon without my permission, and my sweat glands ignited a riot in my armpits. My brain was not to be outdone by my raging sympathetic system and started to play video of the previously mentioned scenarios from the night before. Then, the mental audio kicked in and started its dramatic diatribe, “You will trip and fall flat on your face, get up a bloody mess and cause the stage and decorate your lovely suit with your blood. You will forget your talk and freeze in front of your colleagues speechless with an absurd look on your face.”
All of this turmoil and the visceral response was the horrible dance I danced before speaking in public. Then, one day, I had an epiphany: I realized that I have a fear of public speaking.
“Do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
Shortly after my recognition of my fear, I decided to face my fear by getting on more stages in front of more audiences and start podcasting about my journey. I am sharing this narrative with you because it is a fact that fear holds us back often. For many of us, our common thread is that we fear public speaking (glossophobia). If you share this experience with me, my challenge to you is that it is time to face your fear.
How? Well, a great place to start may be podcasting. This media has a significant side effect of turning introverts and those with glossophobia into powerful beings who are passionate about getting their voices heard.
Get Your Voice Heard – Podcast.
“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning”
– Maya Angelou
Are you an expert in your field? Do you find yourself repeatedly fielding the same questions about your area of expertise? If you answered, “Yes!” to either of these questions, then it is time for you to get your voice heard. Now that you have decided to face your fear, it is time to amplify your voice.
Perhaps, you have a cause that you are passionate about, and you aren’t sure how to get the word out about it. This desire is your voice. Perhaps, you have your own business and are looking for ways to get more clients, customers, patients, or collaborators.
Let’s take a moment to look at why this media is a high amplifier. More and more Americans are listening to podcasts each year. This media is growing at exponential rates. Think about your pattern of behavior; if you are like me, you probably listen to a podcast during your commute to work. Or maybe you consume your podcasts when doing household chores or working out.
Every year, the statistics on the growth and use of podcasts is studied.
Key Stats From Edison Research 2019
- 70% of Americans aged 12+ are now familiar with the word “Podcasting.”
- 51% of Americans reported having listened to a podcast at least once in their lives.
- 32% of Americans report having listened to a podcast within the past month.
- The average number of podcasts consumed in the last week among weekly podcast listeners has stayed at seven
- More than half (53%) of monthly Spotify users aged 12-24 report being monthly podcast listeners, up 32% last year
- Podcasting grew slightly as the “audio source used most often in the car” — now at 4%, up from 3% last year.
Podcasts will continue to grow, and your tribe will continue to consume this medium. Who better to get the word out about your cause, product, or service than you! What better way to reach your tribe and speak to them!
